We have worked almost exclusively with Aboriginal communities for the last fifteen years. Since 1995, we have assisted with numerous Aboriginal ecotourism projects, including a comprehensive role in researching, developing, financing and implementing the Cree Village Ecolodge project in Moose Factory, Ontario. Cree Village Ecolodge has recently been listed as one of the Top Ten Eco-Destinations in North America by Natural Home Magazine. “In 2005 Cree Village Ecolodge was the recipient of the Air Canada Business of the Year Award by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada.” Current projects include Wa-sh-ow James Bay Wilderness Centre for Moose Cree First Nation and Kamestastin Lodge for the Innu in Labrador.
Rick was extensively involved with MoCreebec Council of the Cree Nation and their award winning Cree Village Ecolodge (www.creevillage.com) from 1994 through 2000 when it opened. In 2007 he was brought back to Cree Village to work on planning desired enhancements. Other major assignments have included Washow James Bay Wilderness Centre (opening 2008), Kamestastin Lodge (proposed) and Historic Cobalt.
In addition to his work with Aboriginal communities in Canada, Rick has a long-standing interest in Indigenous communities in South and Central America. He lived and worked in Bolivia in 1984, and has since traveled extensively in Central and South America.
In September 2007, Rick moderated and presented at several ecotourism workshops at the North American Ecotourism Conference in Madison, Wisconsin. In March 2006, Rick and his partner Pauline hosted Aboriginal ecotourism workshops at the Aboriginal Tourism in Canada National Conference. In 2005, Rick designed and facilitated a three day ‘Achieving Excellence in Aboriginal Ecotourism’ workshop for Indigenous communities in Eastern Canada. Back in 2002, Rick was also a guest instructor with The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) Ecolodge Planning and Development Workshops at the World Ecotourism Summit. Rick has an Honours Bachelor Degree in Economics, and has completed several courses towards a Masters Degree in Rural Planning and Development.
